Kolkata doctor rape-murder case highlights: Protests intensify; medics seek justice for victim, law to protect health workers




Protests are intensifying across India in response to the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor, Dr. Moumita Debnath, at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. The incident, which occurred on August 9, 2024, has sparked nationwide outrage, particularly among medical professionals who are demanding swift justice and better protection for healthcare workers.
In Kolkata, doctors and medical staff have staged protests, shutting down services in several hospitals. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced a 24-hour nationwide strike, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators and the implementation of stronger laws to safeguard healthcare workers. The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) of RG Kar Medical College has vowed to continue their protests until their demands are met.
The case has also taken on a political dimension, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee leading a protest march, demanding the death penalty for the accused.
