Mathews resists but England chip away

Image
Mathews resists but England chip away England continued to chip away at Old Trafford in the opening Test against Sri Lanka with two more key wickets in the post-lunch session. Angelo Mathews put up a resistance for Sri Lanka to bring the deficit down to 15 but with only six more wickets in hand, England continue to hold the upper hand. Sri Lanka started the session with a boundary as Dimuth Karunaratne drove one to beat the mid-on fielder. England lost a review in the very next over when an lbw appeal against Karunaratne was turned down. Rubbing salt into their wounds, Karunaratne followed that up with another boundary past mid-off to grow in confidence. Sri Lanka needed their former skipper to bail them out and he did respond in style, taking on Gus Atkinson for two more boundaries. It needed a change from both ends for England to break the partnership as Mark Wood bowled one short, only for Karunaratne to get an inside edge that hit the thigh pad before going straight to Harry B...

Durand Cup 2024: Pereyra Diaz’s Injury Time Winner Helps Bengaluru FC Pip Kerala Blasters En Route to Semis Pereyra Diaz scored the only goal of the match in added time to help Bengaluru FC beat Kerala Blasters 1-0 and qualify for the semi-final of the Durand Cup. Bengaluru FC edged out Kerala Blasters 1-0 to book their place in the semi-finals of the Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Friday. Former Blaster Pereyra Diaz was the difference for Bengaluru as he netted the only goal of the match. It was always going to be a cagey affair, given the recent history between the sides but on Friday the match got off to a cracking start. A long ball right after Bengaluru FC’s kick-off was directed at Jorge Pereyra Diaz down the middle. The keeper Som Kumar too came out of his line to collect but both players crashed into one another and the Kerala Blasters youngster had to be subbed off after medical intervention.

Sri Lanka collapse before lunch as England thrive after being asked to bowl first Sri Lanka  80 for 5 (de Silva 28*, Kamindu 5*) vs  England Ollie Pope 's temporary reign as England captain got off to a flying start on the first morning at Old Trafford, as Sri Lanka stumbled to 80 for 5 after opting to bat first in the opening Test of the series. A combination of poor shot selection and unplayable deliveries undermined their best intentions on a hard and dry surface that offered good carry to the quicks but also a freakish degree of uneven bounce, as Dinesh Chandimal discovered to his cost. Choosing to bat first may have been the brave option for Sri Lanka, but even before the end of the first half-hour, it was being made to look distinctly foolish. After inching along to 6 for 0 in a misleadingly sedate first 33 balls, the innings was then wrecked by three wickets for no runs in the next ten. The first blow was landed by Gus Atkinson, whose initial focus had been on a full le...
